U.S. Women in STEM Manifesto

U.S. Women in STEM

American women have contributed countless inventions and discoveries to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in the United States. You may know the stories of women like Dorothea Dix, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Grace Hopper.

Join us and be inspired by women working in STEM today.

They are being systematically erased from U.S. government websites. We won’t let them be lost.

We are crowdsourcing - tell us your story! (Click the menu icon to send us a story. We will NEVER share your email address.)

I’m a straight white cis male and I’m especially thankful for your stories so I can share them with my sons.
Thank you for your invaluable contributions that I benefit from regularly. Thank you for doing the extra work to make sure your story is told!!

  4. I think it might be good to add link buttons to social media platforms to spread this website, or/and even create profiles on such media (e.g. bluesky, instagram). People looking for this kind of information will surely find your webpage, but I think it would also be good to pop up in feeds for anyone so they can learn and be aware.

  9. I am currently pursuing my master’s in crisis and strategic communication. In 2023, I became a mother for the first time—and almost immediately, I was consumed by Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD). It’s a common but devastating illness, one that remains deeply misunderstood, stigmatized, and shamefully underfunded.

For 42 weeks, my OBGYN suspected I had PMAD but didn’t know how to tell me. The night I gave birth, she told my husband instead—because she couldn’t find the words to tell me directly. And he, uncertain of how to bring it up, didn’t tell me either. So for three weeks, I spiraled in panic and paranoia, completely alone, until a friend finally took me aside and shared her own PMAD experience. That moment changed everything. It wasn’t just my suffering that haunted me—it was the silence.

That silence—the failure of communication—kept me from receiving the care I desperately needed. But it also became my purpose.

For my master’s project in crisis and strategic communication, I am developing a crisis communication plan and community engagement strategy designed to bridge the dangerous gaps in PMAD awareness. This plan can be used by the perinatal community, healthcare professionals, families, friends, religious leaders, and beyond to break the stigma and equip people with the language and tools to talk about PMAD openly. My goal is to empower communities everywhere through effective communication and use social analytics to better understand the needs of perinatal people.

No one should suffer in silence.

  13. Just wanted to chime in, I'm a man in IT, nearing retirement. I've had multiple female bosses and as a management type I've managed many incredibly talented and outstanding women. I cannot for the life of me understand why men cannot respect the contributions of women. Do these guys not have wives and daughters and sisters and nieces? I have a 20 year old daughter in college and fear for her future.

  40. Hello!

My name is Chloe. I just came across your story on instagram and was so angered, yet motivated to be a part of the solution. I wanted to ask if you would be in need of a photographer in the Tacoma/Seattle Washington region to take portraits of women in STEM for the website. I graduated in 2023 from Stockton University with a BS in Marine Science and a minor in photography. I have been a portrait photographer/studio manager for over a year in WA. My studio was unfortunately just closed in January due to rising costs in the region, but that means I have more free time to pursue my own photography. And I would be truly honored and grateful to be a part of this movement to amplify women’s voices and achievements in STEM. If there is any way I can get involved, please let me know. I would love to be involved in any way possible.

  42. I'm from Sweden and and studying to become a prosthetic engineer, not sure if that counts as STEM but I've always loved hearing stories from women in these fiels and felt empovered from them, I was absolutely horrified to find out about the blatant erasure going on in your country and I'm so sorry this has happened. I have a lot of spare time and would love to help in any way I can, if there is a way to donate to the project I would love to do so, or if you need help researching about historical women in STEM or anything and have stories written about them, Please reach out. Amazed by this project and with so many involved it will go far <3
